Kenny Vibez

Kenny was influenced by music from a very young age and still remembers the “sound clashes” his parents used to have every Saturday morning.

From Chaka Khan, Earth Wind & Fire, Tina Turner & Kool & the Gang to Jimmy Cliff, Carlene Davis, Dawn Penn, Beres Hammond & Bob Marley. With all of those early soulful and reggae influences it’s surprising that the first album he bought was Prince Charming by Adam & the Ants. This would be any early reflection of his appreciation for near enough all types of musical genres.

Kenny left the UK at the beginning of the 80’s to move to Canada, at a time when the whole hip hop & breakdance culture was taking over. Whilst living there he was heavily influenced by the B Boy Culture but as he became older New Jack Swing came to the scene, and in his eyes this was the perfect mix, with a combination of a dope beat, sweet vocals & a little verse thrown in with a rap. This was a vibe that would have any jam rocking… If you’ve seen House Party the Movie, then you’ll definitely know what I’m talking about, “we were still in High School, not old enough to get in to the club, but let me tell you those house parties were legendary”!!

He then moved back to the UK after graduating from High School to attend College.  Still listening a lot to RnB & Hip Hop and attending regular events in London & Poole at venues such as Starlight & The Venue.

The biggest game changer in Kenny’s musical journey was Jungle Music. Another perfect marriage of sounds with the ragga and soulful samples mixed down with the drum patterns, alongside some sub-low bassline. Kenny believes this sound was instrumental in bringing a lot of up and coming producers through who were able to bring a sound to the masses which would bring people from all different backgrounds together, regardless of class, race, gender…it was all about the music…those real times!!

There were a lot of events he can remember from back then, but for him, The Roast, was where he was introduced to Garage. It was after hearing a set from the Dreem Team he fell in love with the 4X4 & 2 step sound.

Kenny has been DJ’ing for just over a decade…a late starter, but his passion for music and the energy he likes to bring to his mixes is fuelled by his desire to share with his listeners, versatility and love for music from so many different genres. In this time, he has done various private parties, local club nights and of course a resident with us here at GDR. He has also had a taste of promoting nights, such as the popular Rinse & Reload & We Bring the Vibes events.
